Well it’s that time of year again when we service our horror loving Lunatics and this time we’re showing some love to the Lady Lunatics™. Yes, like the 5th part of any good horror franchise we’re going with a gimmick. The property’s tank is low and the studio is looking for some fuel to get the audience back to the theater. Something that will intrigue the base and sow discussion on the internet that will praise, highroad and bash it. There’s no such thing as bad press and the genre has enough heroines and villainesses to make it interesting. So let the white knights & incels do their worst because hell hath no fury like a woman and THIS time… the fear is female.

programmed by Oscar Benitez and Victor Moran

wirtten by Victor Moran

Programming so real, we did it in heels!

Hey, I told you we were leaning into it and you had to know what you were getting into 5 programs deeps BUT JUST IN CASE I’m gonna explain to the possible newbies how we choose the movies. The seasoned can skip ahead to the next paragraph but I’d stick around. Shit got weird. Not gonna lie. So as per usual Oscar and myself met in the woods with 2 lists of 31 movies, our worshiping materials and offerings for Marbas but THIS TIME we had a plan. The moon was full, the blood rained upon the candle wax dripped across the ouija board at the center of the pentagram and just like that Marbas summoned. But before he could give his decree I prayed he listen to my plea and that’s when I pitched him the idea of the gender leaning gimmick. The lord Marbas grew silent. He looked to Oscar but he diverted his eye from the beast. He looked to me and I did the same before he inched closely to the top of my head as he bellowed out a low pitched growl that’s breath seared the ends of my hair. The demon galloped back and gave a roar into the sky. Fire engulfed the woods around us, gusts of wind formed a funnel of flames as Oscar dug his fingers into the dirt just to hold on when suddenly silence. The sky quiet, the woods alive and Marbas gone. Then me and Oscar yelled at each other back and forth till we came up with this female centric program that we’re pretty sure has Marbas’ blessings to make your spooky season the shit.

As for what is the same and what’s new, let’s start with the same. YES, the AUDIO and VIDEO COMMENTARY are back and like always the AUDIO COMMENTARY will be open for everyone to stream as of now and the VIDEO COMMENTARY will be released on their programmed day, EXCLUSIVELY for VML subscribers. Why exclusively for THEM? Because THEY are special… and they pay. Click here to pay but if you can’t pay, we got something special for you in the “What’s New” bit coming up right now. ON TO THE EW! First new thing is that our YouTube channel will be actively posting videos every weekend throughout the spooky season. Videos like the one right below this paragraph.

The second and final new thing is the supercool table of contents found under this paragraph and the top of the page. Find each day quickly as you come back through the month thinking, ‘What’s today’s movie?’. Boom. You’re welcome.

DAY: 01020304050607080910111213141516171819202122232425262728293031

Ok, so now that we’ve taken care of ALL the housekeeping of this unwieldy franchise as we use it to spotlight the complex but often complementary relationship between women and horror in our love letter -slash- desperate attempt to keep our intellectual property bankable,

IT’S THE 31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN!

Les Diaboliques (1955)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

We start our program on Sunday with this frighteningly French tale of female horror about an abusive, cheating husband Michel, who finds himself at the center of a macabre murder plot set in motion by his wife, played by Vera Clouzot and his mistress, played by Simone Signoret. Fueled by their mutual hatred for Michel, the two scorned women work together to kill him but when the body mysteriously goes missing, paranoia and madness begins to set in. This movie is full of suspense and genuinely creepy ass moments that will have you unsettled and second guessing everything that’s going on. So get your lights off, popcorn popped and brush up on your french because the spooky season has started and it’s gonna be diabolical.

The Strangers (2008)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 2 for some home invasion horror as Kristen and James, played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, are tormented by three masked murderers. Look, I get it, it sounds like any other home invasion horror movie but it’s simplicity is it’s genius and Live Tyler kills it in a performance that makes you wonder why she hasn’t done more horror movie roles. It plays on every fear you’ve ever had when sitting at home alone and it does it well. It’s bloody and high octane. Trust us, it’s worth the watch and a perfect movie to get this terror train moving in the right direction. Do yourself a favor and watch this with the lights on.

Single White Female (1992)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 3 gives us an urban horror story about the most relatable fear of all… getting a roommate. See Allison just broke up with her fiancé and is in need of help with the rent and puts an ad in the paper. Hedra answers the ad and the two quickly become besties but when Alison and her man start talking reconciliation, Hendra starts to show her true colors. This movie is fucking amazing and anybody who has had to get a roommate they dont know has had this very fear. I can’t say enough about this movie. I saw it for the first time when I was young and I never thought that a haircut could be so fucking horrifying. Led by two GREAT performances by Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, this movie will have you vowing to never have a roommate again as long as you live.

Scream 3 (2000)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Moving along to Wednesday for day 4 and the third installment of the Scream franchise. Sidney Prescott is successfully in hiding when another string of ghostface killings, this time on the Hollywood set of ‘Stab 3’, brings her out of hiding to solve the mystery. This movie has a bad rep, often said to be the worst of the Scream series but the gore is loud and its mystery will keep you guessing till the final reveal. As usual, Neve Campbell and Cortney Cox bring it and Wes Craven continues his horror masterwork as director. Forget what everyone says about it and prepare to get caught up in the riddle of murders that is, Scream 3.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 5 gives us some suburban horror in this story about Claire Bartel, who was just sexually assaulted by her doctor. After reporting him to the authorities he weasels his way out of prison by killing himself, causing HIS wife to have a miscarriage. Driven by revenge, the doctor’s wife makes a plan to ruin Claire’s life one piece at a time. Rebbeca De Mornay gives an amazing performance as the doctor’s psychotic wife and Annabella Sciorra plays Claire as sympathetic and strong. I promise you will never forget this movie and you’ll definitely think twice before hiring a nanny to watch your kid. Special shout out to Ernie Hudson who has one of the most memorable scenes with De Mornay that will leave you uneasy and terrified at what this woman is capable of. Hide your husband, hide your kids because the hand that rocks the cradle cannot be trusted.

Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Into the dream world we go on day 6 and we felt that a Friday night is the perfect time for the fifth film in the Nightmare franchise but this time, it’s about abortion. Alice, played by Lisa Wilcox, the almost lone survivor of the last nightmare is back and so is Freddy but HOW? Perhaps her child can help figure it out because turns out, SHE’S PREGNANT. Along with fellow survivor boyfriend Dan and a new group of friends, Alice will attempt to kill Freddy AGAIN before he kills them all. Now you all know I unapologetically LOVE this franchise and this installment is no different. The nightmare sequences are wonderfully creative, the kills will shock you with their inventiveness and as always, Robert England brings his charming terror as the finger knife wielding, bitch spouting boogie man, Krueger. So prepare to have some bad dreams and be wowed by the practical effects because this time… it’s a boy.

Wanna enter the nightmare with friends? Watch it with us and if it’s your first time watching it, you’ll have company as per tradition, it’s Oscar’s first time reaction. So join us by putting us in your ear or on the corner of your screen.

Hereditary (2018)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 7 for writer/director Ari Aster’s tale of looming doom. The head of the Graham family has passed and grief is not the only thing she’s left behind. Secret ancestries, cryptic symbols and strange goings on drive her daughter Annie to ask herself if she is losing her mind or if there is truly something otherworldly going on. Look, I don’t wanna say too much because this movie works best the less you know but what I WILL say is that you will feel lost, you will feel uneasy and Toni Colettes performance as Annie is one of the BIGGEST oscar snubs for not only not winning “Best Actress” but not even being nominated. You will be talking about this movie to anyone that is willing to listen and some that dont wanna hear it. You’ll never look at the dark corners of your room the same again and you’ll forever ask yourself if evil is learned or if it’s hereditary.

Us (2019)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 8 gives us the horror of the doppelganger in Jordan Peel’s second outing as writer/director. When Adelaide Wilson and her family take a vacation to her childhood beachfront home, Adelaide’s sense of dredd slowly begins to ratchet up. Her husband tries to ease her mind but when four masked people invade their home and take them hostage, her fears prove correct when they remove their masks to reveal that THEY are US. Now a lot of people talked  A LOT of shit about this movie when it came out. After the hit of Get Out, people felt this was a step back but UNPOPULAR OPINION… I think this movie is better than Get Out. The story is like a giant Twilight Zone episode that suddenly turns into a slasher picture, the cinematography is gorgeous, the score is haunting and in YET ANOTHER one of the BIGGEST snubs by the oscars, Lupita Nyong’o’s DUAL performance was not even nominated. It’s bloody, it’s scary and taps into the primal fear of looking up across a room and seeing yourself standing there.

Titane (2021)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Moving along to day 9 for some good ole body horror on your Monday from writer/director Julia Ducournau. We follow Alexia, played by Agathe Rousselle, ten years after a car accident left her with a titanium plate in her head, an apparent car fetish and a desire for murder. This is another one of those movies where I kind of don’t want to tell you too much because I saw it without knowing anything and it was a fucking ride. Off putting at times, yes, disturbing for some, for sure but there is more to this than you think and we thought it would make the right kind of psychological trip for a monday night watch in the spooky month. Don’t ask too many questions, don’t overthink it, just hit play and let the movie take you on a journey that you will DEFINITELY not see coming. So strap on your go-go boots and ask that car if its wearing a condom because Titane is here to fuck your entire world up.

The Silence of The Lambs (1991)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Welcome to day 10 Clarice where we’re hitting you with this Jonathan Demme classic starring Jodie Foster. Clarice Starling is a top FBI trainee and her superior, Jack Craword, requires her help in solving a case. He’s looking for a real piece of work psychopath called Buffalo Bill and Crawford thinks the only way to catch a psycho is with another psycho. Cue Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a former psychiatrist turned murderous cannibal. Now a reclusive prisoner, Crawford thinks that Clarice as a young attractive woman could be the very thing to peak Lecter’s interest enough to have him help them with their investigation. What else can I say about his movie that hasn’t already been said. The suspense holds, the scares are strong and Foster and Hopkins are pitch perfect. Enough is enough, go watch the movie, you’ll thank me later.

Pearl (2022)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

It’s day 11 and do we have the perfect pick for your Wednesday and hear me out… It’s a prequel. I know, prequels usually suck but this is possibly the best one I’ve ever seen. We follow Pearl, the killer from X, back when she was a young girl in the same farm as before taking care of her sick father and overbearing mother. Full of stars in her eyes with the dream of being on the movie screen, we get to see the moment that she became the homicidal maniac we all know and love. Ugh, I fucking love this movie. Mia Goth KILLS it in her second performance as the titular Pearl, the violence is a punch to the face and Ti West’s direction is right out of a Frank Capra film. I know, I’m gushing and I’ll keep gushing if I keep writing. So keep your pitch fork sharpened and the gator fed ‘cause Pearl has that X factor and nothing’s gonna stop her rise to stardom.

The Invisible Man (2020)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 12 for a surprisingly well done remake of a Universal Horror classic. Cecilia is in an abusive relationship with a real shitbag. An insane scientist with loads of money and shit morals. After managing to escape in the middle of the night from his prison-like compound, Cecilia flees to a friends house where she remains in hiding till news comes through that her asshole ex-boyfriend has killed himself but after starting to live a normal life, strange things start happening that lead her to believe that not only is this guy not dead… he’s invisible. I was honestly shocked at how good this movie was when I first watched it. Elisabeth Moss really sells her transformation from a victim of domestic violence to the hero of her own story and the movie pulls off bringing the story to the modern age while simultaneously holding on to the vibe of the Universal Monsters era. It’s a hell of a trick and it pulls it off effortlessly. Prepare to be surprised because this one sneaks up on you like the invisible man.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1987)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 13 is a Friday so you know we had to hit you with another entry in the Friday the 13th saga. Jason Lives is the third and final entry in the Tommy Jarvis trilogy of the franchise and it’s a blast. See Tommy has just gotten out of the system and he’s making a beeline to Jason’s grave to, you know, dig up the body and stab it a bunch of times with a metal rod pulled off the cemetery fence. LIKE ANY NORMAL PERSON WOULD DO. Anyway, long story short, lighting hits the rod and now Jason has been brought back to life and he’s itching to start a killing spree but when Tommy goes to the police to tell them what happened, they lock him up. Lucky for him, the sheriff’s daughter is spunky and has taken a liking to him. This movie is just a great time. The kills are over the top with a now undead Jason, it’s funny, it’s scary, it’s everything your ass should be watching on this Friday the 13th. Enjoy.

Love you some commentaries? Well then watch along with us by putting us in your ear or on the corner of your screen and as per tradition with the Friday franchise it’s Oscar’s first time reaction.

The Slumber Party Massacre (1983)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

It’s day 14 and do we have another banger for you Saturday. The directorial debut of Amy Holden Jones AND she also co-wrote the damn thing. Not a big deal now but this was the 80’s and it’s a horror picture. Let me set the scene. A group of highschool girls’ slumber party turns into a murderous rampage after an escaped serial killer and his trusty power drill show up uninvited. Seem like a short synopsis? Well that’s ‘cause this movie doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it. It’s kill after bloody kill after gory kill. It is all the things you think of when people talk about the 80’s slasher craze and it does it with the perfect amount of trash. Just enough to make it entertaining but not so much that it’s The Toolbox Murders. I honestly can’t praise this movie enough for its pacing and its simplicity, it is FIRE. So light up your joints and get your pajamas on ‘cause there’s a madman loose in your neighborhood and he’s about to turn your slumber party into a massacre.

It’s a party so watch it for the first time with us by putting us in your ear or on the corner of your screen. That’s right, neither Oscar or myself had ever seen this one which makes it a first time reaction for the both of us and due to a brief curse from our lord Marbas, we’re cartoons the whole time. Seriously.

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 15 and we’re going from a slumber party to a hurricane party. A group of 20- something friends/frenemies are throwing a hurricane party in a mansion in the middle of nowhere because, horror movie. As the storms begins to hit, boredom sets in and the group decides to play a party game of bodies bodies bodies but when it ends with an ACTUAL dead body, the cracks in these friendships start to show and all their past dramas make each a suspect to one another. This one just came out a year ago but to me it’s an instant classic and mostly due to the AMAZING performances by the actresses playing the group of friends. Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders and Rachel Sennott ALL do an incredible job of playing clichéd Gen Z archetypes but somehow manage to make them feel like real three dimensional people and director Halina Reijn frames them all in a way that make YOU suspect everyone. It’s a suspenseful whodunnit big on the scares, laughs and satire, you just gotta watch the thing. I’ll wait here.

The Craft (1996)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Moving along to day 16 for every 90’s goth girl’s favorite movie. Sarah is a telekinetic teen who has just moved to a new town and is entering a new school when she catches the eye of three misfit students that think her telekinetic gifts can turn their wannabe witch rituals into the real thing. Little do they know that the power they want is not exactly the power they can handle. Starring Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Rachel True and Fairuza Balk, it’s the most 90’s female cast ever and its soundtrack follows suit but don’t let that fool you because this movie gets darker and darker as it goes on. Seriously, there are moments of horror in this movie that are legitimately unsettling and the third act is everything you want a movie about a coven of witches to be. So put on your black clothes and read your incantations because the witching hour is upon us.

Carrie (1976)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 17 keeps the telekinetic train rolling with Sissy Spacek playing the titular Carrie in Brian Depalma’s adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name about a teenage girl that spends her days getting bullied by her peers at school and abused by her crazy religious mother at home but when the torment becomes too much, Carrie’s supernatural abilities start to rear their violent head. If you haven’t seen this 70’s horror classic then I envy you because I would love to be able to watch this for the first time again. De Palma directs the fuck out of this thing and the performances by Spacek as Carrie and Piper Laurie as her mother are ICONIC. Visually stunning, legitimately disturbing and wonderfully spooky, there is a reason this movie is in the hall of fame of horror. Prepare to have your mind blown because you’ll never forget the night that Carrie went to prom.

It Follows (2014)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

It’s day 18 and we have an innovative horror concept for your Wednesday viewing. Jay is a teenager like any other. She has her life, she has her friends and as of recently she has her boyfriend. But after they have sex for the first time he chloroforms her, ties her up, tells her that he has just transferred a curse to her and that she has to sleep with someone else to get rid of it before dumping her at her house and disappearing out of town. Sure she thinks he’s just some crazy asshole but when she begins to be followed by some THING she starts to realize that maybe he wasn’t lying. Yeah, you read that right, this is a movie about a sexually transmitted curse. I know, it’s kind of a brilliant concept and Maika Monroe’s very believable performance carries the movie. Not to mention director David Robert Mitchell squeezes everything he can from this insane idea with restrained camera work, moody lighting, fantastic gore and an opening scene that lets you know exactly what you’re in for. Don’t try to run ‘cause it will follow.

Last Night in Soho (2021)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 19 for director Edgar Wright’s first foray into straight horror. Eloise is a first year fashion student in London but her meek nature and obsession with glam 60’s fashion make her feel isolated from her fellow students. So much so that she decided to leave the dorms and rent a small flat in Soho but late at night it transports her to the swinging 60’s where she lives the life of an aspiring singer. Drunk by the fantasy of her favorite era she enjoys her nights but eventually the rose tinted glasses come off when the time traveling dreams unearth a murder that she feels compelled to solve. This is a great little ghost story with a solid lead performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy. As for Wright, he uses all his camera tricks and style filtered through a horror lens for this suspenseful thriller with an insanely satisfying ending. Enjoy the past while you can because this may just be your last night in Soho.

Lifeforce (1985)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Blasting off on day 20 for this underrated sci-fi horror directed by Tobe Hooper. An international team of astronauts encounter an alien ship while on a mission in space. They decide to investigate and past a sea of what seem to be large dead winged creatures they find what appear to be three dead humanoids in pods. Excited by their discovery they take the pods back to their shuttle and down to earth but when the one female of the three humanoids wakes up on a new planet, she begins to suck out the life force from everyone she encounters and her victims begin returning from the dead to do the same. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Is this a space vampire movie?” and you’re goddamn right, its a fucking space vampire movie and holy shit does this thing get fucking wild. Our lead space vampire, played by Mathilda May, KILLS it in this movie especially considering that 1. She’s fully naked for most of this movie and 2. She had to learn her lines phonetically because she didn’t speak a word of english. Aside from that, the optical/practical special effects are mind blowing and the animatronic corpses of the victims are some of the best in cinema. Is the movie insanely horny? Yes but it’s fucking balls to the wall batshit and the perfect movie for you to watch this friday night.

Watch this gem along with us by putting us in your ear or on the corner of your screen and due to Marbas cartoonifying/disappearing Oscar, Miles is taking his chair for this commentary and it’s his first time reaction. Angered by this, Marbas cursed our audio but don’t worry, he forgave us 10 minutes into the movie.

Alien: Resurrection (1997)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 21 keeps us in the realm of horror sci-fi for the fourth movie in the Alien franchise. Icon Sigourney Weaver is back but this time she isn’t technically playing Ripley. See 200 years after Ripley’s death the military has brought her back through the miracle of genetic cloning. Now this new Ripley finds herself on a new ship with a new crew and that’s right… a new alien. This is another one of those movies in a franchise that people say is the bottom of the barrel but it’s too much fun to hate. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet of Amelie fame gives this entry in the saga a fast paced comic book vibe and adding Winona Ryder and Ron Pearlman to your cast never hurts. PLUS we finally get to see how the Alien would move in the water in a particularly terrifying action sequence. So sit back, turn off your brain and enjoy this delightfully campy sequel that is sure to entertain.

Night of the Comet (1984)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 22 caps off this weekend’s space theme on earth with a comet. After a sighting of a rare comet the planet is suddenly turned into zombies. All but a small few survivors and we follow two sisters, Regina and Samantha, that survived the night of the comet without turning. Alone in the world and struggling to survive, these two will find themselves being attacked by multiple fronts as they have mindless zombies on one end and scientists wanting to experiment on them in hopes of finding a cure on the other. This movie is so 80’s in the best way. The hair is big, the colors are loud and the violence is over the top. Starring Catherine Mary Steward and Kelli Maroney as the two sisters and full of enough blood and bullets to keep you entertained, this movie is sure to make your spooky sunday a fun one. So get your popcorn ready and keep your eyes on the sky because the night of the comment has arrived.

The Relic (1997)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 23 where we start the week off with this erie creature feature. After a string of brutal murders in a Chicago museum has the police department stumped, one cop teams up with a biologist to figure out what the hell is going on but after they realize their killer may be something more than a man, the two rush to find the beast before the museum’s upcoming gala. A lot of people forget about this movie but it’s a solid little horror movie with some great suspense, a moody pace and perfectly played lead performance by Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore. It’s slow but creepy and when the horror hits it doesn’t shy away from the scares. I know we live in an age where everyone is always saying “No one ever talks about this thing or that” but genuinely, nobody ever talks about The Relic and this program is here to rectify that.

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 24 gives us the relatable horror of highschool. Meak student Needy, played by Amanda Seyfried, and hot girl Jennifer, played by Megan Fox, are close friend’s despite being on opposite sides of the popularity scale but after Jennifer gets possessed by a demon and begins feeding on the population of male students, she finds herself having to consider the possibility of killing her only friend. Now I was never a big fan of Megan Fox but this was the movie that made me change my mind. Fox isn’t just a hot girl in this movie, she is legitimately scary and Seyfried does a good job playing the stereotypical nerd girl too. Directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody of Juno fame, this movie dips its toe in the trashy pool satirically without ever feeling exploitative. The kills go hard, the dialogue is witty and it delights in switching visual styles from highschool teen movie lighting to horror aesthetics throughout. Give it a chance because we think you might just like what you see when it comes to Jennifer’s Body.

Teeth (2007)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Moving on to day 25 for another murderous female teen with a twist. Jess Weixler plays Dawn, an intentionally virgin teen so devoted to the idea that she is even a member of her highschool’s chastity club but when she meets a boy special enough to break her vow it turns into a horribly gorey situation. Look, I’m not gonna be around the bush here, this is a movie about a killer vagina. It’s a vagina with teeth. They try to fancy it up by giving it the term vagina dentata but it’s a killer vagina movie. If the concept alone is making you feel squeamish, maybe skip this one but if the idea of vagina with teeth FUCKING SHIT UP sounds too bat shit crazy up to pass up then this is the movie for you. Sure it’s an insane notion for a movie but that;s what horror does best. So prep your nerves and give into the madness of Teeth.

Possession (1983)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

It’s day 26 and we thought we’d hit you with some psychological horror on this, the final Thursday of your spooky season. Anna has just told her husband Mark that she wants a divorce and seeing as he has been  out of town on business for a while, he assumes that she has found someone else in his absence though she denies it but his suspicion begins to grow in a different direction as her increasingly strange behavior starts to feel more ominous than a simple case of adultery. I’m just gonna say two names right now; Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill. These two actors are why this movie works. Don’t get me wrong, the direction by Andrzej Żuławski is nothing to sneeze at but the two lead performances are truly the key to this one. We all know Sam Neil is an incredible performer but prepare to have your mind fucking blown by Isabelle Adjani. Her portrayal is SO moving, SO powerful and SO CONVINCING that you will find yourself thinking, “Is SHE losing her mind, is HE, am I?!” It is honestly so good that as it goes along you forget you’re watching a horror movie and just as that happens, BAM! It hits you with a reminder that will shake you to your core. I’ve said enough, watch the movie and thank us later.

Demonoid (1981)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

On to day 27 and we have a balls to the walls thrill ride for your Friday night. The story is simple. While in Mexico looking for silver in an old mine, a married couple come across the remains of a 300 year old dismembered hand but when the ancient dust restores itself to its original form it attacks and possesses the husband who goes on a rampage before disappearing into the night. Armed with a gutless priest and a closet of ICONIC fit after ICONIC fit after ICONIC fit, Jennifer (the wife) will do what she can to stop the demonoid from transferring from person to person while leaving a trail of bodies in its wake. This movie is as much of a fucking blast as it sounds. As far as hand possession movies go, it’s easily top 3 and I wasn’t joking about the wardrobe. I don’t know if know if the lead, played by Samantha Eggar, was friend’s with the costume designer or if they just happens to be amazing at her job because JESUS this woman looks cold as fuck in EVERY scene she’s in. Aside from Eggar’s look, the rest of the movie is too enjoyable to NOT watch. The lore is ridiculous, the gore gets SERIOUS and the special effect of the severed hand is actually really good. DAMN I love this movie and you will too. WATCH IT!

Watch this  for the first time with Miles and myself as this is a first time reaction from the BOTH of us. So put us in your ear or on the corner of your screen and watch along as we freak out over the greatness of Demonoid.

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Day 28 gives us a supernatural horror comedy from writer/director Ken Russell. In a small rural English town sisters Eve and Mary continue to live on their family farm alone since their parents recently went missing. Their Scottish friend Angus is in the middle of an archaeological dig on their property when he finds a large skull that he believes are the remains of the local mythical beast, the D’Ampton Worm, famously killed by the ancestors of local rich guy Lord D’Ampton. As the four continue the search for the sister’s parents, the reclusive Lady Sylvia Marsh comes out of hiding to do some searching of her own. Mainly for a particular Scotsman and a virginal farm girl. Ths movie is so much fucking fun and for a movie with a very young Peter Capaldi and Hugh Grant, they both get thrown to the wayside because the star of this movie is without a doubt is Amanda Donohoe as Lady Sylvia. She’s charismatic, she’s scary and she’s pulling off the thigh high boots and nighty combo. Full of random humor, gorgeous scenery, surprising gore and psychedelic visions that are just trademark Ken Russell. So be sure to equip your kilt with a grenade and badger because the Lair of the White Worm is about to make your night.

Ride the white worm for the first time with Miles and myself as this is a first time reaction for BOTH of us and man did we have a ball. So put us in your ear or on the corner of your screen and watch this crazy movie with friends.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

For day 29 we’ve got George A. Romero’s independent horror classic. Barbara and her brother are visiting a family grave when a strange shambling man attacks them. After her brother is killed she runs into a house where she runs into Ben. Traumatized from her brother’s death to the point of being catatonic, she and Ben suddenly realize that they’re not alone in the house when a group of people hiding in the basement make their presence known. With no idea what’s going on, they all attempt to stay alive as a hoard of flesh eating zombies surround the house and arguments threaten to tear them all apart. What can be said about this movie considering that a million think pieces have been written about it over the years. The subtext, the invention of the modern zombie, blah blah blah, it’s all been said SO I’ll say this… I really hate that Barbara is always seen as “The helpless female”. I know that she spends most of the movie in silent shock but I’VE always seen her as the audience surrogate. Most of us aren’t Ben or Tom or Judy… a few of us ARE Harry but MOST of us are Barbara. So stop shitting on her internet, it pisses me off. Now do yourself a favor, turn off the lights and spend your final spooky Sunday in the night of the living dead.

The Descent (2005)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Moving along to day 30 for the most claustrophobic horror you’ll ever experience. Shauna Macdonald plays Sarah, a woman who has spent the last year dealing with intense emotional trauma. She meets up with some friends in North Carolina with the plan to explore some caves but when they come across the remains of another group of spelunkers and disturbing cave drawings they start to think that there may be someone or something underground with them. I skipped this movie when it first came out and the second I saw it I regretted that I missed it in theaters because watching it on an at the time little TV, I found myself slightly hyperventilating and that was before the flesh eating monsters ever even show up. The cast is fantastic, the scares hit hard and the gore is shocking, to the point that it’s almost overwhelming but stick with it because when you reach the end you will be happy that you did. So get your gear together and figure out a way to reach the surface because you will not survive the descent.

Halloween (1978)

[TRAILER] – [WHERE TO FIND IT]

Well, it’s day 31 so you know what that means, it’s Halloween and everyone’s entitled to at least one good scare on Halloween. Now we have heard from a few folks that have complained that we always end it with this movie but come on, you KNOW there is no better movie to watch on Halloween. It’s the perfect mixture of simple premise, focused directing, geometric cinematography and unforgettable score. You can say what about this movie and what about that movie but nothing will ever beat a shot of Laurie in the foreground of a darkened room as a slow piano riff plays when Micheal Myers’ white mask peaks out of the shadows and into the light. Every once and a while Oscar and myself used to second guess our choice to make this a permanent fixture on the list but now being 5 years into doing the 31 Days of Halloween we no longer question it. It’s not just the perfect choice to end the program with, it’s the ONLY choice. So quit your bitching, grab the leftover candy from the bowl and watch Halloween.
